Springfield Memorial Hospital partners with Medline to improve operating room efficiencies

New Peri-Op Performance Program™ provides clinical and business roadmap for today’s complex issues

The perioperative team at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Illinois is like so many others today: managing competing priorities, evolving practices, increased costs, supply constraints and staff shortages, all challenges exacerbated during, and likely to remain after, the pandemic.

To help perioperative departments and services identify inefficiencies and improve outcomes, Medline recently launched the Peri-Op Performance Program. Earlier this year, Springfield Memorial (formerly Memorial Medical Center), a full-service teaching hospital with a Level 1 trauma center performing more than 18,000 surgeries a year, became the first to partner with Medline on this new initiative.

“We developed the Peri-Op Performance Program because we continue to see the pressures that our perioperative leaders face with managing so many competing priorities.”

“When Medline first presented the Peri-Op Performance Program to us, we were at a place where we were looking for help and assistance in optimizing our operations,” said Brianne Schramm, director, perioperative nursing at Springfield Memorial, part of Memorial Health. “Being able to perform the same things with less cost and more efficiency, but producing the same optimal outcomes for our patients, is what we strive for daily.”

Managing competing priorities and challenges

“We developed the Peri-Op Performance Program because we continue to see the pressures that our perioperative leaders face with managing so many competing priorities,” said Medline Perioperative Clinical Program Director Kim Haines. “The OR is such a multi-faceted environment. There are so many variables that impact outcomes. So we needed to look at a broader approach to really solving some of those most complex issues.”

As part of the Peri-Op Performance Program, Medline initiates a thorough “discovery assessment” with the hospital’s perioperative team, “a process to better understand our healthcare partners’ current goals and initiatives,” said Haines. This includes a meeting with all key perioperative leaders—from the operating room, sterile processing, preoperative, and pre- and post-anesthesia—to learn about their specific challenges. The Medline team also conducts a walkthrough of all operations, from the receiving dock to point of use.

During the assessment, Medline looks for ways to:

  • Reduce costs and spending.
  • Improve patient and procedural outcomes.
  • Streamline supply chain management and procurement.
  • Optimize space and storage throughout the facility.

“Medline then compiles data and insights to create a plan that aligns with the perioperative team’s goals,” said Haines.

A multi-faceted strategy

For Springfield Memorial, that multi-faceted plan included product and procedural recommendations to improve supply chain and other efficiencies, including a reduction in sterile processing instrumentation tray utilization and consolidation, suture management redundancies, and skin health and hand hygiene solutions.

“We’re so deeply involved in the day-to-day operations, especially during the pandemic, that we don’t necessarily have the whole insight of what organizations like Medline can offer us. Your team comes in from the outside and provides us the opportunity to take a deeper dive at some of our practices and solutions; to some of the problems we’ve experienced day to day that we just don’t know how to get out of,” said Lexanne Darwent, Memorial director, perioperative quality & support services.
