Medline’s newest distribution facility in Katy, Texas opened for business this month and is fully operational. The cutting-edge facility serves hospitals, physician offices, assisted living facilities, ambulatory surgery centers and all other healthcare providers throughout Texas and Louisiana. With the local expansion, Medline will add 100 new jobs to its existing 375-member team to support healthcare in the Houston region.

Medline previously operated a smaller distribution center in Katy. The company’s latest investment is an effort to stay ahead of providers needs’ due to the rapid growth of healthcare in south Texas and beyond.

“We are excited that we can continue to grow in Katy as a partner to healthcare and a local employer,” said Medline Executive Vice President for Global Operations Bill Abington. “Not only do our outstanding team members transition with us to our new facility, but we are also situated well to expand our team in this fast growing area of the U.S.”

The $100 million medical-grade distribution center is a 1.2 million-square-foot facility from which tens of thousands of individual products and devices will be shipped to healthcare providers across the continuum of care. Additionally, the building’s energy efficient and LEED-certified design also minimizes environmental impacts. The new facility utilizes the latest technology, including:

  • An advanced robotic picking system
  • Hands-free voice picking systems
  • Full redundancy backup for power, communications, etc.

The Katy Distribution Center also is spurring innovative partnerships with customers. For example, Houston Methodist is utilizing space to handle central receiving, case picking and inventory processing to increase efficiency, save money and enhance patient experience.

“We are building our latest generation of distribution centers with our customers in mind,” Abington continued. “Our investments create new opportunities to handle more volume, increase speed and improve customization that enhances patient care.”

The Katy Distribution Center is part of a $500 million investment in 2021 and follows on the heels of Medline’s $1.5 billion Healthcare Resilience Initiative campaign the past three years.
