Family visits were a regular part of the daily routine for nursing homes. That all changed in March, 2020 when the pandemic began. East Coast-based Athena Health Care was able to pivot to outdoor visits during the warm summer months, but they knew that wasn’t a year-round solution. That’s when they turned to Medline to update and expand their cleaning protocols in preparation for indoor, in-person visitation.

The Medline Newsroom spoke with an administrator and an infection preventionist from Athena to better understand the measures they undertook to allow indoor visits while continuing to keep residents, visitors and staff safe. Given that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, travels primarily through the air, one critical part of Athena’s strategy has been to utilize UV technology that helps disinfect the air in rooms that see high traffic. Thirteen Athena facilities in Massachusetts are now using S400, a portable UV disinfection device that combines HEPA filtration and UV-C light disinfection to kill bacteria in the air.
