Medline joins UWLC to create Early Learning Trails

Medline employees recently partnered with United Way of Lake County (UWLC) to create Early Learning Trails (ELTs) – accessible, outdoor learning games and activities – at two Waukegan, Illinois elementary schools.

The volunteers participated in events at John S. Clark Elementary School and Hyde Park School to create the ELTs—brightly painted, outdoor paths marked with numbers one through 10, letters of the alphabet and shapes. The volunteers also painted sensory paths that encourage children to release energy and tension by traveling through a series of physical movements, including hopping, skipping, balancing, jumping and stretching.

“Early Learning Trails encourage active movement, promote academic readiness, and foster social, cognitive and kinesthetic skills, all in a playful and safe space.”

“Early Learning Trails encourage active movement, promote academic readiness, and foster social, cognitive and kinesthetic skills, all in a playful and safe space,” said Bobbi Selvik, UWLC Community Engagement Manager. “We are grateful to Medline and Medline employees for helping us to add these features at two additional Waukegan locations, and for the company’s ongoing support of UWLC.”

The ELTs are part of UWLC’s broader child and youth education program, supported by an annual Medline donation. The Medline Service Corps – a group of volunteers who bring their unique skills and hands-on experience to the people and communities most in need – also supports Leaders United, a UWLC youth mentoring and college-readiness program.

The UWLC is one of 15 Medline nonprofit partners in Lake County. The company has operated for more than 50 years in Lake County and has six facilities, including manufacturing and distribution centers and a national sales center. The company employs more than 3,000 in Lake County and provides an annual economic impact of more than $1.3 billion.

“Medline has deep roots in Lake County,” said Evelyn Miller, ESG manager at Medline. “We are proud to call this region home, and proud to support UWLC in its broad efforts to assist local children and families.”
