Frontline clinicians help Medline Remedy Skin Care develop new, intuitive packaging

Leading healthcare skin care line unveils updated design, educational resources

New Medline Remedy packaging

Medline Remedy—the leading skin care line in healthcare—has unveiled new, redesigned packaging and product instructions to help busy clinicians more quickly identify and utilize the correct product.

“Clinicians are being asked to do more with less,” said Josh Kolof, Medline director of product management, Advanced Skin Care. “The newly redesigned Remedy products include the same, high-quality ingredients that have made us number one in the market. As the leader, we always want to do better. More intuitive packaging makes it easier to select the right product for the right situation, and ultimately, ensures best practice bedside care.”

Nursing shortages and staff turnover rates remain high, while an estimated 2.5 million people in the U.S. develop pressure injuries each year— painful skin lesions that can increase a patient’s risk for infection and prolonged care.

“It’s valuable to have a product line that is easy to learn and can be used quickly, efficiently and effectively,” said Patricia Turner, RN, BSN, CWS, CWOCN, Medline director of clinical services.

Medline holds over 50% of the skin care market share across acute care and post-acute care settings. Launched in 2004, Medline’s Remedy Skin Care line has grown into a comprehensive system of products to help with every skin care need. After pioneering a unique color coded packaging system, Medline continues to make updates to improve product use.

Improving efficiencies, optimizing care

To help develop the new packaging, Medline solicited input from certified wound care nurses and other clinicians across the continuum of care. Participants were asked about product preferences and to rate various concepts.

Remedy’s new design features color-coded packaging with large, one-word product descriptions:

  • Green products “cleanse” hair and skin
  • Purple products “moisturize,” restoring hydration to dry skin
  • Blue products “prevent” infection by providing a silicone, protective barrier that prevents skin breakdown associated with incontinence
  • Orange products “protect” skin exposed to prolonged moisture
  • Red products “treat” skin with fungal infection

In addition, tiered labels—Essential, Clinical and Specialized—along with functional icons, provide further clarity.

“The clean and professional design indicate that it’s a clinical product, and the color-coded system and bold font tell me it’s easy to distinguish the indications for each product,” said a nurse manager involved in the product review.

Another surveyed clinical manager agreed: “With facilities being short on staff, you’ve got to move a little faster. [The packaging] helps me get the product quicker so I can get to my patients.”

Broader training and resources

The new system is supported with broader training and resources, including reference guides; posters with branded images and product descriptions for storerooms, breakrooms and workstations; and “badge buddies” that keep “Remedy front and center all shift long.”

Remedy products continue to include high-quality ingredients—a unique blend of plant-rich and other proven botanical ingredients—safe for even the most fragile skin. In a Medline survey, 99% of nurses agreed that product ingredients can impact clinical outcomes, and 90% said they preferred to use products for patient care that are paraben free, sulfate free and dye free.

The product ingredients and recommended use reflect the new Coalition for At-Risk Skin’s 21 consensus statements—providing specific guidance on preventive skin care. The statements highlight the benefits of nutrient-based creams, and recommend that patients receive 1 fluid ounce of moisturizer twice a day.

Remedy products are part of Medline’s Skin Health Solution portfolio —a full range of valuable tools and resources to help clinicians deliver best practice care and improve skin health.

“The new Remedy packaging helps to ensure that busy nurses and staff can quickly grab the right product for each patient every time, while knowing how much product to use for optimal care,” said Kolof.
