EVS associates from California and Pennsylvania recognized for positively impacting patients and peers

There are hundreds of thousands of workers devoted to cleaning and disinfecting hospitals and healthcare organizations as part of Environmental Services (EVS) teams. To recognize these employees, who are critical to infection control efforts, EVS directors and supervisors nominated staff for their continued dedication. Medline is announcing the recipients of the 2021 “EVS Super Star VIP of Clean” contest.  This year’s honorees include two employees who are boosting morale, implementing new procedures, and going above and beyond to help patients and colleagues.

Lizzeth Guerra, Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center: Guerra has been an EVS specialist with the hospital for 15 years, cleaning about 10 rooms a day once patients are discharged. She has earned trust with patients through her attention to detail, with some patients specifically requesting her environmental cleaning assistance. Her approach and warmth with co-workers and patients truly help the hospital fulfill its mission of being the community’s most trusted resource for health.

Mary Cowles, Heritage Valley Health: This environmental services associate transitioned from a career in home inspection and has worked at the hospital for two years. In her role, Cowles cleans patient rooms in the morning and does terminal cleaning when patients are discharged. She was nominated for her compassion and ability to connect with patients. These attributes were especially appreciated during the pandemic when many patients could not receive family or other visitors. With more than 20 EVS team members at Heritage, Cowles is a true team player who is willing to work overtime or trade shifts to help out colleagues in a bind. She’s a ray of sunshine to everyone she comes across.

“Thank you to Lizzeth and Mary for everything they do. They play vital roles in the everyday lives of their colleagues and patients, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share their inspirational stories,” said Megan Henken, vice president of EVS product management at Medline.
