Medline completes acquisition of PrefConnect surgical preference card solution
Evolution of partnership bridges gap between supply chain management and OR leadership

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Oct. 19, 2023 – Medline today announced the successful acquisition of PrefConnect™, a propriety technology built to optimize surgical preference cards. For the last five years, Medline has been the exclusive distributor of the PrefConnect technology to healthcare providers.
Surgical preference cards are a personalized, critical checklist of operating room supplies for a particular procedure and the main driver of activity and costs in the surgical supply chain. However, these cards are not frequently reviewed or updated, resulting in nearly 40% of supplies on a typical preference card being unused during surgery. PrefConnect is a cloud-based software solution that utilizes a proprietary algorithm to continually track, update and make actionable recommendations for surgical preference cards based on actual supply use in surgical procedures. The result is a reduction in waste, human error and unnecessary time spent finding and returning supplies.
“The evolution of this partnership will enable Medline to have greater flexibility in how we present one of the most dynamic offerings in the marketplace today for improving the operational efficiency of the OR,” said Amanda Morgan, senior vice president at Medline. “We are thrilled to have the PrefConnect team join the Medline family and continue the momentum that has been building over these last five years.”
“We developed PrefConnect in 2017 with a mission to deliver a technological solution to the age-old preference card problem experienced within the surgical supply chain,” said Luis Romero, co-founder of PrefConnect. “With Medline’s extensive presence in the industry and shared commitment to improving operational efficiency in the perioperative environment, it will be exciting to see PrefConnect continue to grow under the Medline portfolio.”
Today, more than 50 hospitals across the U.S. are utilizing PrefConnect to optimize surgical efficiencies in the operating room.
“As the number of procedures being performed in ambulatory surgery centers continues to increase, we are excited for this opportunity to offer PrefConnect into additional healthcare settings and further strengthen Medline’s offerings to help improve operations across the continuum of care,” said Brendan Dooley, senior vice president of sales, ambulatory surgery centers, at Medline.
